Teacher exchange in Baciu, Romania, June 2006

One week before Romanian school closed, a group of four English teachers came to share their experience with staff and children from Scoala Speciala "Transilvania".  From the 5th till the 8th of June children and adults experienced again the joy of working, learning and getting together. It was a week full of movement, physical exercise, a week of teambuilding. Two English teachers gave the Romanian colleagues the recipe of stimulating the mental potential through specific movement experiences, helping the children improve their academic skills. This brand new method, called "Brain Gym" should be inserted into the Romanian daily school activities. The English teachers’ help was great by developing this workshop and by donating written material regarding Brain Gym theory. These materials are already partially translated and adapted by the Romanian teachers.
The other two teachers worked on empathic moving and handling of children with paresis. This workshop was attended not only by the Romanian teachers, but also by the caretaker personnel of the school.
New moving and handling equipments were donated from Kingfisher school to the Romanian school.
The planned activities of this week aimed:
• Brain Gym
• Empathic moving and handling
• Working with autistic primary level children
• Visit to the Special Kindergarten No. 35 from Cluj-Napoca
The week actually started with an additional activity: the Kingfisher school presentation (in pictures and even a short movie, made by the senior pupils from Kingfisher (11-12 years old), that helped the Romanian teachers become more aware of the Kingfisher school’s mission.
Everybody who attended the Comenius activities (including the pupils’ parents) felt as if there hadn’t been enough time was too short and that they would like to repeat this great experience.
The motto of this week was for sure: "Learn easier by having fun together".
On the personal level, strong and sincere connections were established between English and Romanian teachers. It was the perfect group visiting the Romanian school during the perfect period. They have leveled so well that their bond is still fresh and vivid.
